Do you insist on proper glassware?

bryan 2007.10.29 @ 21:52

Another user here asked me a couple of months ago whether or not it was "improper to poor a non-pilsner into a pilsner glass." I told him it wasn't improper, but that the glass wouldn't be "doing anything" for the beer. Each style of glass is designed to present the beer to your senses in a specific manner, and pilsner glasses are designed to emphasize the specific aspects of pilsners.

What do you think? Do you insist on proper glassware?

I've gotten by so far with what you see in the logo - a shaker pint (for that American Bar feel), half a dozen wheat glasses (how could I do wheat in anything else?), a dozen bubble (?) pints (for just about anything), and four pilsners (guess what for). Luckily my wife will also let me pull out our large wine glasses for Unibroue enjoyment. :)

Now that I have access to good homebrew, and other good beer, I've learned the value of the glass. It's much easier to leave the yeast residue in the bottle when you pour into a glass, and it's much easier to smell the beer in a glass.

I think we may actually own more glasses designed specifically for beer than for any other beverage. And while my husband provided the impetus for the purchases, I was the purchaser for nearly all of them.

The "bubble pint" is actually called a nonic (not sure on the origin of that). [HTML_REMOVED]

I don't insist on proper glassware at bars, but at home I do. I have a ton of regular pint glasses, a couple wheat beer glasses, a tulip (for Belgians), a snifter, and a couple bigger flutes.

I'd say that the tulip and snifter are "must have" glasses. I use them quite often.
